Forget about everyone behaving perfectly.Family portraits don’t need to mean standing in a line, looking at the camera and trying to make everyone smile at exactly the same time.

We’ll absolutely get the beautiful family photograph where everyone is looking at the camera — but we’ll also have some fun.

We’ll walk, talk, play, cuddle, laugh and work with whatever your family brings on the day. With young children that might mean running around and exploring. With teenagers, it’s usually about keeping things relaxed. And if someone in the family hates having their photograph taken, they’re definitely not alone!

You don’t need perfectly behaved children. You don’t need to know how to pose. And you don’t need everyone to love the camera. That’s my job.

My aim is to make the experience enjoyable enough that everyone relaxes, personalities come through and we capture photographs that actually feel like your family.

There probably isn’t a perfect time for family photographs.

Someone has braces. Someone has just lost their front teeth. The toddler won’t sit still. The teenager has changed their hair again. Dad says he hates having his photograph taken.

That’s family life. And six months from now, something will already have changed.

One of my favourite parts of being a family photographer is seeing the same families return over the years. I’ve photographed couples who have become parents, babies who are suddenly school children, and children who somehow seem to have turned into teenagers.

The photographs become more valuable as the years pass because they capture your family at one particular point in your lives.

Bringing the whole family together?

Getting everyone there is the hard part. Photographing them is my job.

Grandparents, adult children, partners, cousins, babies, toddlers, teenagers — and the family dog too.

For extended family sessions, we’ll make sure we capture the big everyone-together photograph, but we won’t stop there.

We’ll work through the combinations that matter to you — grandparents and grandchildren, individual family groups, siblings, cousins, couples and children — while also capturing the laughs and interactions that happen in between.

Because an extended family session should give you much more than one big group photograph.

Extended family sessions are quoted according to the size of your group and what you’d like captured.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my children don't cooperate?

Don’t worry — that’s completely normal. I don’t expect children to sit still and perform for the camera. We’ll work with their personalities, change things up when we need to and keep the session moving. Sometimes the unplanned moments end up being the favourites.

My partner hates having their photograph taken. Is that a problem?

Not at all. They’re in very good company! I keep things relaxed, give plenty of direction and concentrate on getting everyone interacting rather than thinking about the camera.

What should we wear?

Think of dressing the whole family as creating one coordinated outfit. Choose colours and styles that work together rather than matching everyone exactly, and keep things simple and classic so your photographs don’t date quickly.

Colour photographs beautifully, so choose a complementary palette that suits your family. Avoid large logos, clashing colours or busy patterns, crinkly fabrics and precisely matching siblings.

Most importantly, make sure everyone is comfortable, particularly children. If you’re unsure, lay everyone’s outfits together on the bed and see how they work as a group — or feel free to get in touch and I’m happy to help.

What happens if the weather is bad?

We’ll keep an eye on the forecast leading up to your session. Not every cloudy or windy day means we need to postpone, but if the conditions aren’t going to work we’ll discuss the best option.

Where will our family portrait session take place?

I photograph families on location rather than in a studio. We can choose somewhere meaningful to your family or I can suggest locations around the Northern Beaches, North Shore and Sydney based on the style of photographs you’d like.

When is the best time of day?

Early morning and later afternoon generally give us the most flattering light outdoors, but we’ll also consider the age and routine of your children and the location we’ve chosen.

Can we bring our dog?

Absolutely, provided dogs are permitted at our chosen location. Pets are part of the family too, so I’m very happy to include them.
